Finnish Charts 2/2012

Adele's 21  holds on to the top position on the second Albums Chart of 2012. Chisu's Kun valaistun climbs up to number two as Nightwish's Imaginaerum falls down to number three. Erin's Hunningolla stays on the fourth place as does Lauri Tähkä with his debut album Polte at number five and Tuure Kilpeläinen ja Kaihon Karavaani with Erämaa at number six. Nickelback reaches a new peak position for Here and Now as it reaches #7 this week. Kari Tapio has this week's second biggest leap as Laulaja 1945-2010  jumps from 41 to 25, only the children's album Kaikkien Aikojen Paras Lastenlevy makes a bigger leap from 50 to 32. Hillbilly Flatbox, with the self-titled Hillbilly Flatbox, is this week's highest new entry at #14 with The Black Keys' El Camino at #38 being the only other new release on the chart.

Adele returns to the top of the Singles Chart with Someone Like You, with Rolling in the Deep joining it at number two and Set Fire to the Rain at number seven. Chisu's Kohtalon oma is at third place. Last week's number-one Lord Est feat. Mikael Gabriel's Vuosi vaihtuu took a dive as was expected and fell down to eight. Flo Rida feat. Sia with Wild Ones is the highest new entry at #6 - it's Flo Rida's tenth singles chart entry, but so far not a single week on the albums chart. Haloo Helsinki! get their third singles chart entry with Jos mun pokka pettää - the previous entries are Maailman toisella puolen (#3, 17/2011) and Kuule minua (#9, 41/2011). The third and last new entry in Top 20 is One Direction with What Makes You Beautiful at #20.

The Top 20 of the Singles Chart and The Official Download Chart are again exactly the same, which means that the positions 21-30 on the Download Chart is an extension of the singles chart. There we find three new entries and one long delayed re-entry. The new ones are Pitbull feat. Chris Brown with International Love at #27, Lana Del Rey with Born to Die at #28 (her previous single Video Games stopped at #26 in December) and Olly Murs feat. Rizzle Kicks with Heart Skips A Beat at #30. The curious re-entry is Leona Lewis' Run which most likely returns to the chart at #26 due to her performing it on The X Factor Final  that was shown on Finnish TV during the previous week.

That song is soon to get competition from Roudette's folllow-up single Anti-Hero which this week climbs up to 17 from last week's 22.

Kimbra, who make a huge jump from 46 to 3. Taio Cruz is also the highest new entry with Troublemaker at number 39. The christmas-themed songs don't have similar drops as in many other countries, Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You falls 20-22, Wham!'s Last Christmas 26-30, Bon Jovi's cover of Leonard Cohen's classic Hallelujah 29-35 and Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys' Choir) debuts at number 40 with their version of Stille Nacht. There's an interesting thing with one song that is on the chart in two different versions, the "Coca-Cola commercial song" Shake Up Christmas. Train's original version from 2010 re-entered the chart before christmas and is now at #63 as Natasha Bedingfield's 2011 update titled Shake Up Christmas 2011 falls in its second week from 45 to 70, not even being able to compete against Train's one-year old verison. On the albums chart Michael Bublé continues for a second week at the top, Adele is at number two with 21 followed by Hubert von Goisern at the third spot with his album EntwederUndOder. With the exception of Bublé, Adele, Amy Winehouse at number four and German schlager singer Andrea Berg at #10, the Top 10 is dominated by Austrian acts.

Finnish Charts 1/2012

The bestselling album of 2011 kicks off the year 2012 on the throne as Adele's 21 climbs back to the top spot of the Finnish Albums Chart on the first week of 2012. Out of the nine christmas albums on 2011's last chart, all except Antti Tuisku's Minun jouluni 2 (this week 7-37) left the Top 50 this week, including last weeks number 3 Michael Bublé's Christmas. Nightwish remains on the second position when the previous week's number-one album, Chisu's Kun valaistun, falls down to number three. Erin's Hunningolla climbs back to its peak position, number four, a position it held on its first week and to which it has since returned five times since that, but so far not yet higher. Now in its 29th week on the chart it takes a huge jump from 46 to 4, in total its eighth week on that position.

Elsewhere on the chart it can be mentioned that Tuure Kilpeläinen climbs to number 6, one below its peak position, Juha Tapio returns to Top 10 after spending five weeks between 11 and 15, Nickelback jumps from 20 to 11 (Here and Now debuted at #10), Rammstein's compilation album Made in Germany is at 14 (peak #12), Sade re-enters with The Ultimate Collection at 18 (which was also its peak on its week of entry, 19/2011) and Lord Est enters at 33 with Sonmoro senjoro. The late Kari Tapio is still on the chart with two compilation albums, Laulaja 1945-2010  and Valaise yö – Lauluja elämää suuremmasta  are at 41 and 46, even if the most recent Olen suomalainen - 44 Huippuhetkeä 1972 - 1992  drops out of the chart - his son Jani Jalkanen however re-enters the chart on its new peak position #34. Honorable mention goes to Finnish 70's rock legends Wigwam, who this week re-enters the chart at number 40 with Nuclear Nightclub with an album that topped the charts in August 1975.

The Singles Chart has a new number-one, as the aptly titled Vuosi vaihtuu ("the year changes" in Finnish) by Lord Est feat. Mikael Gabriel moves from sixth position to the top in its second week. Within a year it's already the third chart-topper for Lord Est, as he first reached the top as a featured artist on Petri Nygård's Selvä Päivä on the fourth week of 2011, then on week 27 returned to number-one with Reggaerekka (this time with Petri Nygård receiving the "feat." credit) and now on the first week of 2012 with Vuosi vaihtuu. Last week's number one Adele and Someone Like You falls down to #4, Chisu's Kohtalon oma and Rihanna's We Found Love coming in there between. Meanwhile Adele's Rolling in the Deep returns to its peak position #6 (at which it was almost a year ago on week 13) now in its 39th week on the chart. No new entries on the chart, but Kaija Koo and Avicii re-enter at the low end of Top 20.

Lord Est also tops The Official Download Chart, which this week is for Top 20 exactly the same as the Singles Chart - what's the point of having two separate charts that are exactly the same? With the exception of Nightwish's Storytime and Apulanta's Pihtiote, two singles that were released as CD-singles and therefore had bigger sales on the Singles Chart, it's been for a long time same songs on same positions on both charts. Daddy by Emeli Sandé enters the download chart this week at #25, having already reached #7 on The Finnish Airplay Chart in mid-December. Florence + The Machine with What the Water Gave also enters the chart at #21.

On The Airplay Chart Kohtalon oma by Chisu was the first number one of the year, but on week 2 it was dethroned after seven weeks on the top spot by Nickelback and When We Stand Together, thus giving the Canadians their first number-one hit in Finland.

Year-end charts - Swiss Singles Charts

Hitparade.ch has published their annual year-end charts and the biggest hit in Switzerland in 2011 was the Jennifer Lopez/Pitbull collaboration On the Floor. Adele had the second biggest hit of the year with Rolling in the Deep, but it wasn't her only song in the Top 10; Someone Like You and Set Fire to the Rain can be found at numbers 9 and 10. Pitbull (together with Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) also made the Top 10 on his own with Give Me Everything which was at number eight. In addition to these Pitbull had four more songs in the Year-end Top 75.

DJ Antoine vs. Timati feat. Kalenna with their #2 peaking single Welcome To St. Tropez was the biggest Swiss hit of the year at number six on the list. What can be considered surprising, alternately alarming, is that only four songs out of the Top 75 of 2011 are songs by Swiss artists, the rest is the same songs that were hits in most of Europe (with the exception of a few German songs). It's slightly amazing that same bland songs were hits around Europe; Alexandra Stan's Mr. Saxobeat, Lucenzo feat. Don Omar's  Danza kuduro and LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock's  Party Rock Anthem to name a few... And why Bruno Mars is so popular is one of the mysteries no one can figure out...

Some interesting songs, however, were hits during the previous year. Coming from Finland it's nice to see that Sunrise Avenue's Hollywood Hills is at #21 on the list, Hurts is at 53 with Stay and most of all Israel IZ Kamakawiwo'ole who hit the charts last year with his ukulele cover medley of Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World which was the 16th biggest hit in Switzerland (peak position was #3 in last January). IZ's version was originally released in 1993, but it wasn't until 2004 that the song made it to the charts after having been used in several films (Finding Forrester, Meet Joe Black) and TV-series (ER, Cold Case) during the years. By then even Cliff Richard had already reached the UK Top 20 in 2001 with his cover version of  IZ's version, although in a more produced version than the original ukulele version. But it took until late 2010 and early 2011 until the original version became a hit in Europe, but it was well worth the wait as the single made the Top 5 in Switzerland and Austria and went all the way to the #1 in both France and Germany. The downside of it all is that IZ never got to enjoy the success he has acheived as the big man (at one point weighed 343 kg, standing 1.88 m) died on June 26, 1997 of health problems due to problems caused by overeating.

  2. Adele - Rolling In The Deep
  3. Alexandra Stan - Mr. Saxobeat
  4. Lucenzo feat. Don Omar - Danza kuduro

  6. DJ Antoine vs. Timati feat. Kalenna - Welcome To St. Tropez

Top Singles in Finland 2011

One way to start a new year is to look back on the year that just ended - if there is something worth to remember...

As on previous years a listing of the biggest hits of 2011 on The Official Finnish Singles Chart has been published on Listablogi. That list is based on a point system based on the songs chart positions and weeks on chart and is the closest one can get to a complete list of biggest hits of the year in Finland, as Musiikkituottajat – IFPI Finland only publish lists of best selling songs and singles based on their certifications. Those lists are separated into Finnish releases and Foreign releases, but the lists haven't been updated for several months.

Aided by the Finnish World Championship in ice-hockey Poju's Poika (saunoo) was the biggest hit of the year, although the #2 on the list Petri Nygård feat Lord Est with Selvä päivä was released already in 2010 and would've topped the list with its complete chart run. Adele with Rolling in the Deep, Haloo Helsinki with Maailman toisella puolen and Jennifer Lopez feat Pitbull with On the Floor  rounds up the Top 5. Adele is also at #8 with Set Fire to the Rain and the current number-one single in Finland Someone Like You is at #36 on this list. 2010's biggest hit, Jenni Vartiainen's Missä muruseni on, is #26 on 2011's list, and according to IFPI's not very recently updated site it is the biggest selling single of the year with sales of 8 824 in 2011.

It's worth to mention that songs with huge sales week, such as Nightwish's Storytime (#45), would be higher if it was a purely sales based list. 38 out of 100 songs on the chart are Finnish/domestic releases. The complete list of 2011's Top 100 Singles in Finland can be found here

As sidenote it can be mentioned that Jenni Vartiainen's Duran Duran (#10 in 2010's list, #47 in 2011's list) was the most played song on Finnish radio in 2011.

New year, new number-one...

When the first UK singles chart of 2012 was published today on the first day of the year, it was Coldplay that made it to the top spot with Paradise, as was somewhat expected after news of the mid-week sales were published by The Official Charts Company.

Paradise climbed to the number-one spot in its tenth week on the chart, having been considered chart ineligible upon its release on 12 September 2011, due to it having been offered as a free download for anyone who pre-ordered the album, Mylo Xyloto. With the release of the album on 24 October 2011 the song finally became chart eligible and debuted at #14 with sales of 27,277 copies - it had already sold 118,547 copies in the six weeks of chart ineligibility. After a performance on the X Factor final Paradise reached #2 on the chart, and now in the first week of 2011 it reached #1. It is Coldplay's second number one single, following 2008's Viva La Vida. According to The Offícial Charts Company, Coldplay's Paradise has already sold nearly 410,000 copies to date.

Behind Paradise, the former X Factor contestant Olly Murs reached #2 with Dance With Me Tonight, Flo Rida's Good Feeling is at #3 and last week's number-one Military Wives with Gareth Malone fell down to #4 with Wherever You Are.
